Prof. Dr. Justus HAUCAP

Director, DICE - Duesseldorf Institute for Competition Economics, Duesseldorf

 Justus Haucap is the founding director of the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) at Heinrich-Heine-University of Düsseldorf. From 2006 to 2014 he served as a member of the German Monopolies Commission, which he also chaired for four years (2008-2012). He is also a member of both the German Academy of Technical Sciences (acatech) and the Northrhine-Westfalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as acting vice chairman of the German Networks Agency’s council of scientific advisors. He has been named one of Germany’s 30 leading economists for the last five years in a row by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany’s leading daily newspaper.
 After studying economics in Saarbrücken (Germany) and Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA) and pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Saarland, he held positions at the University of California at Berkeley (1996/97), the New Zealand Treasury (1997-1999), the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg, the Ruhr-University of Bochum (2003-2007) and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (2007-2009).
 His research mainly focuses on competition and antitrust issues as well as the regulation of network industries and digital markets. He regularly advises public institutions such as the European Parliament, the German Ministry of Economics and Energy, the German Ministry of Finance, as well as many private firms and associations.

Trevor D. TRAINA

Ambassador, United States Embassy to Austria, Vienna

 On January 22, 2018, President Donald J. Trump nominated Trevor D. Traina of California to be United States Ambassador to the Republic of Austria. Ambassador Traina was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 22, 2018, and was sworn in on March 29, 2018. He arrived in Austria on May 18, 2018, and presented his credentials to Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen on May 24, 2018. Ambassador Traina has a long history building innovative companies from the ground up. Prior to his appointment as America’s representative to Austria, Ambassador Traina was a technology entrepreneur and philanthropist based in San Francisco. Ambassador Traina’s first foray into tech entrepreneurship was as the founder of CompareNet, Inc., the original online product comparison platform, which was sold to Microsoft in 1999. He was chairman of StepUp Commerce, which was sold to Intuit in 2006. He founded Schema Logic, which was sold to SmartLogic in 2011. He co-founded DriverSide, a venture-funded startup in the online automotive space, which was sold to Advance Auto Parts in August 2011. In 2011 he founded Traina Interactive, which operates the unique life experiences provider, IfOnly.com. Ambassador Traina served on many charitable boards including the Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Gladstone Institute for Medical Research, San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, and Venetian Heritage. He also previously served on the board of the Dow Foundation, a $500 million family foundation, and on the City of San Francisco’s technology advisory council. Ambassador Traina earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a special diploma in social studies from Saint Catherine’s College at Oxford in the United Kingdom. He received a master’s degree in business administration from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Ambassador Traina is married to Alexis S. Traina. They have two children

Dr. Sofie WALTL

Young Expert; Researcher, Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research, Luxembourg

 Sofie R. Waltl is a researcher based at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and a consultant to the European Central Bank. Prior to joining LISER, Sofie was a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, a PhD-trainee at the ECB and a research associate at the University of Graz.
 After obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mathematics, she pivoted to Economics and earned a doctoral degree from the University of Graz. Among other recognitions, she received the `Award of Excellence - Staatspreis für die besten Dissertationen’ by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science that recognizes the best dissertations in Austria.
 She is specialized in economic measurement and data-driven, applied economics. Currently, Sofie is interested in measuring the distribution of wealth in Europe, the effect of wealth inequality on economic performance, as well as measurement issues related to housing prices and housing wealth.
