| His Excellency Lazarous Kapambwe was elected sixty-seventh President of the Economic and Social Council in January 2011. Ambassador Kapambwe is currently the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Zambia to the United Nations in New York since 18 June 2007. Mr. Kapambwe served as co-facilitator of the Ad-Hoc Open Ended Working Group of the General assembly on the Implementation of the Outcome of the Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis in 2009-2010. |
| Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Kapambwe served as the Ambassador of Zambia to several countries. Prior to bilateral and multilateral postings, Mr. Kapambwe held a variety of senior posts in his Government. |
| During his career, Mr. Kapambwe represented Zambia in major multilateral and regional meetings of the United Nations, Organization of African Unity, African Union, Southern African Development Community (SADC), and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Great Lakes region and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD). |
| Mr. Kapambwe, obtained a bachelor s degree in political economy from the University of Zambia; holds a post-graduate diploma in international relations from Nairobi University, Kenya; and received a certificate in contemporary American politics from New York University in May 1988. |
| Terje Rød-Larsen has been President of the International Peace Institute since January 2005. He serves concurrently as the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559 (2004). He began his career as an academic, teaching sociology, political science, and philosophy at the Universities of Bergen and Oslo, before establishing the Fafo Institute for Applied Sciences in Oslo in 1981. As Director of Fafo, he initiated a research project into the living conditions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which led to a request by the PLO in 1992 that he help establish a secret channel for negotiations between the PLO and the Government of Israel. The subsequent talks between Israelis and Palestinians concluded with the Oslo Accords and the signing of the Declaration of Principles at the White House on September 13, 1993. |
