04: The birth of the modern self in literature
Living in an individualistic age like ours few things are more fascinating than the concept of the individual self and ist historical development.
The individual self is a comparatively recent notion, which neither Antiquity nor the Christian Middle Ages had known. This began, like so many other things, to change in the Renaissance. The new desire for more individualised forms of self-expression reached a first peak at the end of the 18th century.
To trace this development we shall read and study some examples for early forms of life writing and then concentrate on Jean-Jacques Rousseaus Confessions and on Karl Philipp Moritz s autobiographic novel Anton Reiser . Finally we will look at the changes in life-writing until the end of the 20th century.
