Special Lecture
The great European Void: linguistic and cultural barriers for a European public sphere
Abstract: The ‚democratic deficit‘ in the European Union is not only the result of institutional shortcomings, but also due to the absence of a European ‚public sphere‘ where the political and cultural debate may proceed for an all-European audience. Such discussion is the task of intellectuals, first. However, the cultural opportunity structure for intellectuals is almost entirely determined by national institutions (universities,
newspapers) and few opportuniites exist at the European level.
