 PhD in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, he has been Visiting Professor at this University, the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. For several years he was Head of the Economics Department and the Academic Director of the research center "Public Sector-Private Sector" at IESE Business School.
 Between September 1994 and September 1996 he was Economic Adviser to the Director General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission in Brussels.

 B.A. in History & Economics from Merton College and M.Phil. in Economics from Nuffield College
 Before coming to the IIF, he was Managing Director and Global Head of Emerging Markets Research at Barclays Capital. He has also worked at the World Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Bank of England. For most of his career, however, he was at JP Morgan, where he helped build Morgan's global economic research effort. He joined JP Morgan in London in 1988, where he rose to become Head of European Economic Research. He was transferred to New York in 1992 to help build Morgan's international research effort. In 1996, he was promoted to Managing Director.
