Film-Workshop

The 2011 Film-Workshop deals with two crucial periods in 20th century of Hungarian film production. In the first part we will look at the considerable number of personalities from the Hungarian film business - among them film makers, actors or composers - who emigrated, especially the United States, and who established themselves as leading figures in their respective fields, for example Zsa Zsa Gabor, Michael Curtiz or Alexander Korda.

The second part of the Film-Workshop addresses Hungarian film production during communist rule. Even though the film industry was state-owned and state-controlled, film makers attempted to undermine regime propaganda through their work. How far did Hungarian film makers manage to navigate between subversion and political »alignment«, and which techniques did they use to this end? The concluding panel will analyse the influence of other genres such as the operetta or online video platforms on film.
