Democracy promises to protect the legal equality of its citizens. Is this promise still being upheld today? Is the legal system still fit for purpose in the face of growing inequality?

The regime which civilises our society appears to be weakened and is falling under suspicion of being the plaything of powerful minority interests. From employment law to the protection of intellectual property via tenancy law - the law draws a red line where the interests of strongly opposed counterparts clash. Who influences the application of the law? Where and how is this application currently being redrawn?

The Alpbach Legal Symposium will explore the achievements and limitations of the law in terms of dealing with inequality. Legal-political ideas which enable the protection of minority rights and pre-emptively foster behaviour in conformity with the law on behalf of the powerful on a national, European and global level will take centre stage.
