ORF-DialogForum Alpbach special: Trapped in the Filter Bubble
-What's true and what's false? In the digital rush of the online world, stories, news and images are considered successful when they’re clicked on and shared. All news items look the same on a smartphone, whether they’re credible or not. "Go viral or die" is the watchword. No wonder then that conspiracy theories, blatant manipulations and propaganda find it easier today to find audiences in the network of online worlds. In the run-up to the US election we pose the questions: What influence do Facebook and Google have on Europe? What is the effect of filter bubbles and echo chambers? How is the quality media in Europe reacting to the upheavals in the media world? And not least: What does the journalism of tomorrow have to do with democracy in our societies? Do we have to accept that the investigatory role of the media will perish with digitalisation?
