2001-2011 Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) in Davos Switzerland. Until 2006 Division Leader Avalanche Warning and Risk Management. From 2006 Institute Leader. Responsibilities: Operational warning systems, risk management research and education.
 Since 2010 United Nations University, Vice Rector in Europe and Director of the Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). Professor at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn. Research focus and responsibilities: Environmental risks research and capacity building.
2003-2010 Head of the Group of European Avalanche Warning Services.
