 Her Excellency Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés was elected to serve as President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly on 5 June 2018. She is the fourth woman - and first woman from Latin America - to hold this position. Ms Espinosa Garcés has over 20 years of multilateral experience in peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and environmental issues. She has served Ecuador as Minister of Foreign Affairs (twice), Minister of National Defence, and Coordinating Minister of Natural and Cultural Heritage; and was Ecuador’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and in Geneva. Ms. Espinosa Garcés also worked in academia, including as Associate Professor and Researcher at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Ecuador.
