08 Art and Protest
The seminar will approach the question of political art from two perspectives. One will expose the possibilities of struggles against discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism in Europe. The other will relate to the status of history and politics in the Middle East. These two perspectives are interrelated. European history is reflected in the contemporary culture and society of the Middle East and vice versa. The two perspectives will be elaborated on using examples such as radical video film productions from Austria and Eastern European countries, performance practices that use specific strategies of performativity as well as art interventions discussing social racism and the status of refugees in the EU.
