10 Collective Memory – Present Focus on the Past
Commemorations of the outbreak of the First World War will mark the year 2014 all over Europe. Collective memory the way societies remember is not limited to commemorations and anniversaries. The reference to the past has an impact on very different levels of identity: in memorials we notice in passing, such as street names and monuments, but also more explicitly in controversial public debates regarding the interpretation of history at the level of local government or in international contexts.
The seminar will shed light on current developments in memory culture and the politics of memory, especially in the context of the European integration process. The seminar will also deal with the future of memory currently under discussion. Finally, it will address the central question of the social function of memory: why do societies commemorate?
