09: The Role of the European Court of Human Rights in Protecting and Developing an Open Society
In September 2013 we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. In the 60 years of its existence, the Convention has influenced and promoted democracy in the European States in very different ways. Its influence on the democratic developments in Central and Eastern European States after the fall of the Iron Curtain was probably most significant. After more than twenty years, it is now possible to take stock. This stock taking will reveal different strategies of adapting legal systems to liberal and democratic standards as well as the reasons for difficulties in law enforcement. Based on the general topic Experiences and Values , the seminar will also look at the extent to which the topos of the democratic society in the European fundamental rights is determined by national characteristics and diversities.
