01: Science and Technology in Sport: Challenge for Industry and Benefit for People

In the recent past, sport and exercise have gained enormous importance in Western industrial societies. Whereas high-performance sport has become a considerable economic factor due to its commercialization by the media, leisure sport has developed into a central pillar of precautionary health care for a large part of the population. The sports equipment necessary for practising the numerous kinds of sport has to be adapted to very different target groups or has to be especially developed for them. In order to be able to do this, the sports equipment industry utilizes the numerous findings from sport science and tries to produce products using the most advanced technological procedures. On the one hand, this working group presents models of cooperation between science and industry within the sports equipment sector and tries to show the problems that may occur in this field. The importance of sport and exercise for tourism in alpine regions will be discussed as well as ethical problems that may be caused through the production of sports equipment or by the commercialization of high-performance sport.
