03: Globalisation in Conflict with Economic Theory?
There are today very few true economists who will actively argue in opposition to the economic aspects of globalization, characterized by the concepts of international free trade, free movement of labor, and free flows of capital. From its roots in Ricardian comparative advantage to the increasingly complex theories flowing out of the world s best economics schools, globalization is viewed by most economists as both credible and advantageous its ill effects arising out of mismanagement and misguided or corruptive (and decidedly un-free trade) political maneuvers as well as essential in reducing global poverty and increasing the prospects of developing countries in the long term. The working group will address how economists regard the economic political aspects of this, the Second Era of globalisation, and how both must be managed to meet the needs of progressively more integrated societies, with an emphasis on the European Union.
