09: Energy Security – the Case of Hydro Carbons
This working group will analyze the topic of the security of energy supply at a time in which our increasing dependence on fossil fuels is brought home to us by constantly rising oil and gas prices. We will therefore discuss alternative gas sources for Central Europe. Another trend that arises and which we will talk about is the dislocation of demand and supply and its significant impact on market price volatility and the necessity of international trade. There are a lot of ideas for alternative energy sources, and thus we will deal with some new technologies like gas-to-liquids and the latest trends in bio fuels. However, not everywhere do we have the political will or the economic and infrastructural basic requirements for widening the energy portfolio. In this context we will also discuss nuclear energy s renaissance that has been talked about much lately. Finally, the working group will try to analyze how the requirements of the constantly increasing demand for energy can be reconciled with environmental obligations like the Kyoto Protocol without impeding the basic demands of world citizens and sustainable economic development.
