11: The phenomenon of Second Life – the creation of a new world?
”Build your own world!” By June 2007, more than seven million registered users followed this invitation extended by the operators of “Second Life”. Whether as trial station for product development and PR, as new market place, as representative of nations and election platforms for political parties, as showroom and concert stage, fantastic game and adventure world, contact bourse or community for new personalities embodies by avatars: the 3-D online world of “Second Life” programmed by Linden Lab seems to offer firms, institutions and individuals chances for developments that are easier to implement in virtual than in real life. Will this create a new form of economy and a new model for innovation? Who will profit from “Second Life”? What are the repercussions that can be expected for communications, learning and identity? Is the parallel world of “Second Life” also a preview to the world wide web of the future or will it only be a passing hype?
