05: Living with Risk and Speculation
Supported by the Federation of Austrian Industries
Our lives and future are basically unpredictable. This is the principle on which all economic thinking is based. Still, business and politics need to make plans to be able to make investments and cope with great challenges. All of us have to “speculate” to a certain degree, “to look into the distance”, if we want to achieve political or entrepreneurial success. Is a functioning financial market or a strong state the better means for minimising financial risk? How do we want to deal with the risks of our lives in the future? Is the state responsible for making provisions for the future or are we responsible ourselves? Is the influence of financial markets a blessing or a curse?
