01: Hayek vs Keynes: The Most Important Liberal Economists
Supported by the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour
The Great Depression in the 1930s and the following decades were strongly influenced by the dispute between Friedrich August von Hayek and John Maynard Keynes. Hayek saw the crisis as a catharsis and advised against intervening in the free markets. Keynes thought that stabilisation policies and strong political institutions applying, for example, stricter regulations to the financial markets were required to overcome mass unemployment. In the financial crisis period since 2007 the ideas of the two most important liberal economists of the 20th century have been under discussion again. What would Hayek and Keynes recommend today?
