in deutscher SpracheAustria’s system of research promotion is well established – but is it in good shape for the future? Do we promote the right projects – and do we promote them well? What are the conflicts that arise between societal benefit and risk acceptance for the state? Is our research system able both to foster exceptional innovation, i.e. creative entrepreneurial approaches, and to take the accompanying risk? Or do risk-minimizing and perfectly styled controlling systems force us to only promote the mainstream? Almost to the point of facilitating the so-called ‘free-rider effect’?
