The New Prishtina presented at the 63rd European Forum Alpbach: Emergence
On the initiative of the ERSTE Foundation, the exhibition The New Prishtina was planned and produced by curator Kai Vöckler for the 63rd European Forum Alpbach in cooperation with exhibition planners and media designers. It presents developments prototypical of cities in post-conflict situations. After the end of the war in 1999, vigorous building activity began in Prishtina, not least due to the large influx of migrants from the rural regions and from cities that had suffered greater damage. In addition, there has been massive investment in residential construction by Kosovo-Albanians returning from exile. Meanwhile, some 75% of the buildings in Prishtina are the results of illegal conversion or construction. According to the urban planning agency, ten new buildings are constructed every day.
In December 2006, Archis Interventions (project manager: Kai Vöckler) conducted a workshop together with Kosovar planners and architects, with the participation of representatives of the city administration, the national Institute for Spatial Planning Kosova and UN Habitat. The workshop was made possible thanks to financial support by the European Cultural Foundation and the ERSTE Foundation. The results of the workshop comprise an analysis of the existing situation and the development of a plan with different strategies for solutions.
The exhibition at the European Forum Alpbach shows the analyses and solution strategies worked out during the workshop, and also communicates a vivid image of the situation in Prishtina to visitors by means of photographs and animation. Accompanying documentation in the form of a twenty-page folder provides participants of the European Forum Alpbach with in-depth information on these prototypical new structures of urban development.
