Europe’s human rights framework of laws and values is in trouble. The general population increasingly sees human rights as benefiting others rather than themselves. Many policy-makers are unconvinced of the “added value” of accepting “human rights-based approaches”. Where does this increasingly “toxic” human rights discourse originate from and what are the possible ways forward?
