Ö1 Children’s University Alpbach – Science and Technology for Kids

-
Hayek-Saal
Breakout /
in deutscher Sprache

The children’s programme of the Alpbach Technology Forum invites girls and boys aged seven to twelve years to solve the questions of “How?” and “Why?” in science and technology in an entertaining way. They get a chance to experience research hands-on and ask questions freely, thus gaining access to scientific themes in an enticing, surprising and above all comprehensible way. These are experiences that stimulate children to think and explore further and will also be passed on to a broader audience together with the radio programme “OE1 Children’s University”.

Children’s lecture and workshop, in cooperation with “Young University” Innsbruck
Deglaciation and hot air – what does climate change do to our Alps?
Like detectives we are going to track down the climate of the Alps during the past 10,000 years. Has it been as warm as now before – or even warmer? And if yes, why is this so? We know that there were times when it was much colder than today, proven by “Ötzi”, who had been trapped in the ice for more than 5,000 years. But when was it particularly cold and why? Climate has always been changing, because it depends on insolation, rain and the amount of greenhouse gases. Today you can observe climate change for yourself. Glaciers are melting, new lakes appear, and plants and animals that like it cool disappear or move farther up. What can we do ourselves to reduce warming? We will show you how to read in nature’s history book and what this all may mean to us.

Participants: Only children of participants of the Technology Forum aged 7 to 12 years or children from the village of Alpbach with special invitations may be registered for this special programme.
