However, some EU members are beginning to question this set of values. They are calling for more sovereignty rather than solidarity. In this context, will Member States manage to overcome their conflict of values? Will they be able to establish a common ground in the upcoming budgetary negotiations and to define common goals for the wellbeing of all? How can economic coordination contribute to a frank cooperation among the Member States?

Renaud DEHOUSSE

| Professor Renaud Dehousse has been President of the European University Institute since 1 September 2016. Prior to this, Professor Dehousse was a Professor and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair of European Law and Political Science at Sciences Po, where he also directed the Centre for European Studies. After studying law at the University of Liège (Belgium), he obtained a doctorate at the European University Institute. | |
| Before joining Sciences Po in 1999, he taught at the European University Institute, where he led the Academy of European Law, and he also taught at the University of Pisa. He was a visiting professor at the universities of Florence (Cesare Alfieri), Lausanne and at the Law School of the University of Michigan. |
Günther H. OETTINGER

| Günther H. Oettinger is European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources since January 2017. From November 2014 to December 2016, he held office as European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society after being European Commissioner for Energy from February 2010 to October 2014 and lastly also Vice-President of the European Commission in 2014. From 2005-2010, he was Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg (Germany) and, since 1984, a member of the regional Parliament ("Landtag"). He was the leader of the CDU Landtag group from January 1991 to April 2005. A lawyer by training, Günther H. Oettinger became actively involved in politics during his adolescence. He is a member of the Federal Executive Committee and of the Steering Committee of the CDU Germany. |
