However, anti-democratic tendencies, social discontent, and political disenchantment are challenging cohesion in and between EU member states. What can we do in order to strengthen solidarity in Europe? The discussion will also be part of Breakout Sessions 7 ‘Civil society and populism’ and 17 ‘The media and populism’.

Eamon GILMORE

| Eamon Gilmore is the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights, and since 2015, he has been the EU Special Envoy for the Peace Process in Colombia. Mr Gilmore is the former Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, and former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (2011-2014). | |
| He was a member of Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) from 1989 until 2016, and was Leader of the Irish Labour Party (2007-2014). He served on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2004-2007) and was Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE (2012). Prior to his election to Dáil Éireann, he worked as a trade union officer (1978-1989), and he was President of the Union of Students in Ireland (1976-1978). | |
| He is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Law and Government in Dublin City University and in 2017 was Visiting Practitioner Chair at the School of Public Policy, Central European University, Budapest. | |
| He is a graduate (Psychology) of the National University of Ireland, Galway, which has also conferred him with an Honorary Doctorate in Laws. He has received several international honours and awards for his work on Peace and his leadership on human rights issues. | |
| Eamon Gilmore was born in 1955, grew up on a small farm in Caltra, County Galway. He has lived in Shankill, Dublin for most of his adult life. He is married to Carol Hanney and they have one daughter and two sons. |
MA Mila MOSHELOVA
Project Manager, Sofia Platform Foundation, Sofia
| Mila Moshelova works as a Project Manager at ‘Sofia Platform’ in Bulgaria which promotes remembrance and dealing with the communist past using methods of historical dialogue and civic education. Previously, Mila worked as a Turkey and Western Balkans Project Coordinator at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to this she was with the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia where she dealt with topics of state capture and illiberal democratic trends. Mila holds MA ‘Politics, Security and Integration in Central and Eastern Europe’, University College London and MA ‘Politics and International Relations’, University of Aberdeen. She takes strong interest in the socio-political dynamics of CEE countries, the complexity of identity and discourse, security and migration. Mila is a PhD candidate at the Department of Political Science, Sofia University. |
Dr. Rita SÜSSMUTH
Former President, German Bundestag, Berlin
| Prof. Rita Süssmuth is former President of the German Bundestag and former Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Women, Youth and Health in Germany. In 2006 she became the Chair of the EU High Level Group on "Social Integration of Ethnic Minorities and their full Participation in the Labor Market". She was also Director of the Research Institute "Woman and Society" and is currently the President of the Consortium of Germany Universities for the Turkish-German University in Istanbul (K-DTU). Prof. Süssmuth was Chair of the Independent Council of Experts on Migration and Integration and holds a series of other positions with national and international bodies such as President of the German Poland Institute (DPI) and as Chairwoman of the Polish-German Science Foundation (DPWS). |

| Hans Vorländer, born 1954 in Wuppertal, Germany, studied Law, Political Science and Philosophy at the Universities of Bonn and Geneva. He got his Ph. D. degree from the University of Bonn in 1980. Vorländer was a Research Associate and Kennedy Memorial Fellow at Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass./USA). He taught at the University of Frankfurt/Main and at the University of Essen. Since 1993 he has been Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Dresden and Chair for Political Theory and the History of Political Thought. Vorländer was Visiting Professor at the Universities of Paris, Turin, Bologna and Mexico City. From 2001 until 2003 Vorländer was President of the German Association of Political Science. He was Chairman of the Scientific Council of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education from 2001 to 2005. He is Director both of the Center for the Study of Constitutionalism and Democracy and the Research Center ‘Mercator Forum of Migration and Democracy’. Vorländer has a long record of political consulting and media appearances, both in print and audio-visual media. He is a member of many international Editorial and Advisory Boards and of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration. |
Ali ASLAN

| Ali Aslan is a Berlin-based international TV presenter and journalist with over 20 years experience as a talk show host, news anchor, correspondent and moderator. His journalistic career spans three continents and includes work for CNN in Washington DC, ABC News in New York, Channel News Asia in Istanbul and Deutsche Welle TV in Berlin. An experienced TV anchor, Aslan hosted the international talk show 'Quadriga' on DW which reached 200 countries and 90 million viewers each week. Aslan regularly moderates and emcees high-level international conferences and events around the world and has shared the stage with top world leaders and personalities, among others, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau, Bill Clinton, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Sergey Lavrov, Christine Lagarde, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Vicente Fox, Madeleine Albright, King Felipe VI of Spain, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, will.i.am, Jane Goodall and Melinda Gates. Aslan studied International Affairs and Journalism at Columbia University and International Politics at Georgetown University. He is a Fellow of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and a member of the Körber Network Foreign Policy and the Global Diplomacy Lab. Aslan has been named a Young Leader by the BMW Foundation, the American Council on Germany, the Munich Security Conference, the German Marshall Fund, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Atlantik-Brücke. |
