02: Common Challenges to the European and African Union – Climate, Demography, Migration
Contemporary migration dynamics represent a multidimensional phenomenon which can be explored from many different angles in order to identify both the causes (push and pull factors) and the impacts of migration. This applies to both African and European perspectives as the potential gains to one side inevitably mean losses to the other.
The issues to be tackled in the seminar relate to changing demographic dynamics, climate change, as well as conflict as a major driver of forced migration. Further migration will be viewed in a comprehensive and holistic manner and the discussions will include topics relating to the possible [un]intended impacts of migration on urbanisation.
Above all, these lectures and discussions will explore important overlapping causalities and look at possibilities for co-operation and collaboration between European and African institutions by presenting examples from both the European and African Union.
