12: Towards a Sustainable Global Carbon Loop
The global carbon loop is strongly defined by natural as well as anthropogenic CO2-sources and sinks. The natural drivers of the C-cycle are linked to minute changes in climate, resulting in feedback effects. All human activities affect climate either directly or indirectly. We will look into the past and discuss to what extent climate affected the rise and fall of civilizations and how ancient societies were able to close their own carbon loops. The seminar explores future options for action: from climate-smart agriculture to geoengineering, hopefully discovering the most promising ways to address climate change for our civilization.
