03: Conflicts around the commons

As natural resources such as land, water, forests and biogenetic goods such as seeds are increasingly privatized and commercialized, so our need increases for accessing and using sustainable solutions for these vital goods. Do we need to rethink the notion of community tied to locality in the context of the debate on the global commons? Does this need to be further nuanced as new phenomena such as climate change impact and Big Data enter the system? The seminar addresses the relationship between exclusion and inclusion within the paradigm of property in order to understand how cooperation and solidarity can structure private interactions and public property. Does the idea of commons allow us to transcend the oppositions between public/private, state/market, community/civil society in order to imagine legal and political alternatives?
