07: Transitional Justice: case studies from the Balkans and South Africa

-
Hauptschule
Seminar /
in englischer Sprache

This seminar examines how societies respond to violent pasts. What happens after conflicts end (and indeed, are they ever truly ‘finished’)? How do communities and states deal with perpetrators of violence, some of whom may still be in power, and how do they care for victims of human rights abuses? How can social and political conflicts be addressed, and how does our collective memory define our political consciousness – even years later? Can societies shaped by traumatic conflicts transform themselves and turn into cooperative communities? Using case studies from South Africa and the Western Balkans, we examine the processes, practices, and organisational forms of transitional justice.
