There is a widespread sense that time is scarce and that the pace of everyday life is accelerating beyond our control. We are frantically busy projecting futures, which are either to be achieved or prevented by acting now. Indeed, the importance attributed to time, the way contemporary societies are temporally structured, but also our relationship to and our perception of time have undergone quite dramatic shifts. Often this is seen as linked to technological change, above all through new information and communication technologies.

This seminar will engage with the paradoxes of time in a digital age from a social science perspective. Technologies do play a central role in the constitution of time regimes, as our very experience of human action and the material world is mediated by technology. So, what is the relationship between technology and time? Does technological acceleration inexorably hasten the pace of work and everyday life? How are the different forms of time generated and how do they blend into the timescapes we live in? Who has time or owns the time of others? What role do gender relations play in all this? This is a first set of questions to be addressed.

Our debates will touch on issues of time related to work, knowledge production, democracy and identity formation.
