in englischer SpracheFor many years, the European Union represented peace, prosperity and soft power. Today, many people see the EU as a symbol of austerity and misguided migration policies. Conflicts within the EU abound, and the scenario of disintegration is real. The problem is that EU experts have written a lot about the rise of the EU, but virtually nothing about its possible downfall. We have many theories of European integration, but practically none of European disintegration. It is difficult to say what disintegration would imply. This seminar will try to comprehend the roots of the current conflicts and crises. Is Europe’s decline reversible? Will Brexit encourage or discourage other countries from leaving the EU? How will the recent success of populist politicians change the pattern of integration? Can the EU be reformed, and if so, how?

| Erik Jones is Professor of European Studies and International Political Economy, and Director of European and Eurasian Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is also a Senior Research Associate at the Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) in Milan. Professor Jones is author of "The Politics of Economic and Monetary Union" (2002), "Economic Adjustment and Political Transformation in Small States" (2008), "Weary Policeman: American Power in an Age of Austerity" (2012, with Dana H. Allin), and "The Year the European Crisis Ended" (2014). He is editor or co-editor of a number of books and special issues of journals on topics related to European politics and political economy including "The Oxford Handbook of the European Union" (2012) and "The Oxford Handbook of Italian Politics" (2015). Professor Jones is co-editor of "Government & Opposition" and a contributing editor of "Survival". His commentary has appeared in numerous outlets including the Financial Times, the New York Times, and other major newspapers and magazines across Europe and North America. As US citizen, Professor Jones has lived in Europe since the late 1980s. |

Ralf Dahrendorf Fellow and Professor of European Politics, St Antony's College, University of Oxford
| Jan Zielonka is Professor of European Politics at the University of Oxford and Ralf Dahrendorf Professorial Fellow at St Antony’s College. His previous appointments included posts at the University of Warsaw, Leiden and the European University Institute in Florence. His work oscillates between the field of international relations, comparative politics and political theory. Zielonka has produced seventeen books including "Is the EU doomed?" (2014), and "Europe as Empire". "The Nature of the Enlarged European Union", (2006). His last book - "Counter-revolution. Liberal Europe in Retreat" has been published by Oxford University Press in 2018. Zielonka frequently contributes articles for various European newspapers and online journals. |
