The focus of this workshop is not musical education, but curiosity, imagination, and the willingness to engage with others in the new and unheard-of. Various sounding materials such as ourselves (voice, body, clothing), stones, wood, paper, water or glass will be examined in order to explore, feel, enjoy and get familiar with them. Historical and aesthetic positions are considered and the composition of different sounds, as well as their purpose, is examined. We explore how to put these sounds together and what for. The seminar is founded on the idea that music is created through human interaction – in joint action, reaction and reflection, just as in life: music as social utopia! It is led by a pair of musicians who have made their name with various projects across the spectrum of New Music, both composed and improvised. At the end of the week we know what remains and what has inspired us.
Musician and Music Teacher, Innsbruck
| | Barbara Schneider-Romen studied recorder, guitar and hammered dulcimer in Feldkirch and Innsbruck and teaches at the Music School "Südöstliches Mittelgebirge" near Innsbruck. She is also a qualified qigong teacher and gave concerts in Europe, USA, Japan, China and Israel. She released her own CD’s, radio dramas and film music. Together with her husband Gunter Schneider, she runs various interdisciplinary projects, including "More Movements for Lachenmann" with the choreographer Xavier Le Roy, "Tracking stones' voices with sound sculptures" by the sculptor Kassian Erhart, "Klopfzeichen/Klangschnitte (tap codes/sound cuts)" with Japanese and Austrian printmakers or "ZIMT" with Angélica Castelló, Burkhard Stangl and Kai Fagaschinski. |
Musician and Composer, Innsbruck
| | Gunter Schneider studied guitar and musicology in Innsbruck and teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Furthermore, he is a performer of new music and an improviser. He cooperates with various orchestras and ensembles (Ensemble Modern, RSO Vienna ...) and gave concerts in Europe, Israel, USA, Japan and China. Gunter Schneider composes solo, chamber and orchestral music, pieces for guitar published by Doblinger, UE and Helbling. Together with his spouse Barbara Romen, he runs own and collective projects, including "Free Music St. Johann", where the focus is on building and training an improvisation orchestra on the initiative of "Arge WirkWerk" in the "Alte Gerberei" in St. Johann in Tirol and an alternative university project in collaboration with the Neuberg College of Peter Waterhouse. |
