01: Climate change and what we need to do about it
According to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from many observations. Most of the observed warming of the past 50 years is very likely due to the observed increase of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. There is strong evidence from all continents and most oceans that many natural systems are already being affected, and the projections for the coming 100 years suggest stronger impacts also for the human societies. However, the Fourth Assessment Report has pointed out that even ambitious emission reduction is technically feasible and economically affordable. The seminar will concentrate on the origin of these changes, and on the required adaptation and mitigation strategies.
