This seminar offers a comprehensive introduction to (i) the theoretical foundations and historical background of the concept of emergence, and its more recent application in various scientific and philosophical areas, which comprise: (ii) the role of the notion of emergence in the philosophy of mind, particularly when debating the problem of phenomenal qualities, and in cognitive science, e.g. in robotics, neuronal networks, and artificial life; (iii) the prima facie tension of mechanisms and emergence in the life sciences, particularly in systems biology; (iv) emergent phenomena as studied in physics and chemistry; (v) the emergence of social phenomena; and (vi) an emergentist s perspective on the problem of free will.
