This seminar will be jointly conducted by Profs. Rajendra Dengle, a Germanist from New Delhi, and Justin Stagl, a Sociologist of Culture from Salzburg. It will be held in English. The basic texts – recommended for previous reading – are: Samuel P. Huntington: Clash of Civilizations (German: Der Kampf der Kulturen, Vienna 1996) and Helga Reimann: Globalisierung: Die universelle Herausforderung (Konstanz 2OO2).
Both speakers will make presentations – interspersed with theoretical questions – on various aspects of the theme and initiate discussions on them.
Aspects dealt with by Dengle will be: cultural identity and anonymity, multi-culturalism and multi-lingualism, religion and spiritualism. Though emphasizing “India” ,as a Germanist Dengle will be also referring to German literary texts along with selected texts from the Indian diaspora. Stagl will present a theoretical overview on the concept “globalization” and deal with some of its specifically cultural aspects, such as “eurocentrism”, fundamentalism and cultural relativism versus human right.
