Urban development often implies the juxtaposition of formal and informal processes. Urban areas are (co-) determined by different players. While informal structures reflect objective or subjectively perceived shortcomings in urban development, they are also the starting point for innovation and processes of redevelopment. The spectrum of these processes ranges from the rehabilitation of forgotten urban areas to the independent incentives of residents with regard to living space, infrastructure and local supply. What momentum drives such developments? What challenges and opportunities lie deep within these processes? How can urban planning and architecture respond?
