02: Silicon Austria: A Game Changer for Austria as a High-Tech Location?

In the global race for digitizing economies and the changes in connection with industry 4.0 the ICT/electronics industry has a special role to play: it is of strategic importance for organizing value-added chains, for product and process quality and forms the technological basis for nearly all crucial innovations in most sectors of the economy. Although Austria’s ICT/electronics industry is traditionally well developed, the national ecosystem for this knowledge-intensive sector seems to have room for improvement. Is it the right time for a Silicon Austria?

 Dr. Stefan Poledna is co-founder and member of the executive board at TTTech. He is responsible for the company's automotive business, all R&D activities, supply chain and quality management. He has over 30 years of international industry experience in innovative embedded systems development and has authored and co-authored several patents. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in computer science with distinction from Vienna University of Technology, where he also lectures on Dependable Computer Systems.

Dr. Andreas WILD

Former Executive Director, Joint Undertaking ENIAC and ECSEL, Munich

 Dr. Andreas Wild retired from the position of Executive Director of the ECSEL Joint Undertaking, a public-private partnership on nanoelectronics, embedded software and smart system integration established as an autonomous European Union body, following the ENIAC JU. Before working in European institutions, he has been the European R&D Director for Freescale Semiconductor and Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector, and managed Motorola R&D laboratories in U.S.A. and Latin America. He has an MS degree from the University "Politehnica" Bucharest, and a Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest, Romania, authored 28 patents and more than 50 technical publications. He is now consulting.

Mag. Michael WIESMÜLLER

Head, Department Key Technologies for Industrial Innovation: ICT, Production and Nanotechnology, Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Vienna

 Initially stemming from the humanities and holding a degree in philosophy of science, working several years as scientists in the Humanities and as Management Consultant with A.T. Kearney he joined the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) in late nineties. He is currently Head of Department for ICT, Industrial & Nano Technologies and Space. Main responsibility of this department covers the design of Innovation Policies for High-Tech-Industries, national R&D strategies and programs in these domains, and all areas of International R&D Policy and Coordination. Among others he acts as Austrian Delegate to the European ICT-Program, as Governance Board Member of the JTI s ECSEL, as Director of the EUREKA Clusters. ITEA 3 and CATRENE and Austrian Lead Delegate to the Key Enabling Technologies. He represents Austria in various Mirror-Groups of European Technology Platforms and in several European Policy Coordination Initiatives.
