Junior Alpbach – Science and Technology for Young People

Against the background of the internet’s global integration and the spread of powerful devices everyone can become a sender of data, information and messages. On the one hand, this results in enormous democratization of our communications mechanisms, facilitating the quick and easy production of and access to information and its dissemination. On the other hand, we are experiencing an increase in tampered messages aiming at manipulating public perception and thus a change in opinions. Such messages are easily transported via nearly uncontrollable social media like WhatsApp, Facebook and so on, which are used as a source of information by a large part of the public. This is compounded by the fact that false information is no longer only generated by people but also by machines that automatically distribute a multitude of messages in no time. What we now know as “fake news” has become a threat to the basis of our democratic societies.
In this workshop the participants will receive practical insight into the latest methods of media manipulation and will develop the topic in teams together with the speakers. The kids will also receive useful tips to identify false information as early as possible.
Participants: Junior Alpbach is intended for the children aged 12-16 of participants of the Technology Forum. Only those children of participants can be registered for the programme.
Please note: limited number of participants, registration necessary! Registration deadline: August 16, 2019
