In cooperation with the European Forum Alpbach, the gallery Schmidt in Reith presents an exhibition by the German painter, designer and sculptor Markus Lüpertz. The contemporary artist, born in 1941, is one of the best known representatives of neoexpressionism and often causes controversies due to his provocative work.

1948 Family emigrates to Rheydt, Rhineland in the West
1956-1961 Studies at the Werkkunstschule Krefeld with Laurens Goosens and educational stay at Kloster Maria Laac (Kreuzigungsbilder); works as a coalminer for one year; further studies in Krefeld and at the Academie Düsseldorf; works in road construction; travels to Paris
1962 Moves to Berlin and begins series of "Dithyrambic" paintings
1964 Opens Galerie Grossgörschen 35 in Berlin with the exhibition Dithyrambische Malerei
1966 Publishes "Art that gets in the way. Dithyrambic Manifesto."
1968 Publishes the manifesto "The Grace of the 20th Century is rendered visible by the dithyrambs I have invented"
1970 Lives for one year in Florence on a prize from the Villa Romana
1971 Awarded German Critic s Association Prize
1974 Participates in the 1st Berlin Biennale Guest lecturer and professor at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe
1975 Publishes first collection of poems, "9 x 9"
1977 Completes wall painting for the Ruhleben crematorium in Berlin Withdraws participation in documenta 6
1981 Publishes collection of poems "und ich spiele, ich spiele..."
1982 Participates in documenta 7; completes stage design for the opera "Vincent" by Rainer Kunad at the Staatstheater Kassel; publishes collection of poems "Ich stand vor der Mauer aus Glas"
1983 Designs set for the opera "Werther" by Jules Massenet at the Ulm Theater
1961-1983 Teaches at the Sommerakademie in Salsburg Publishes the anthology "Gedichte, Auswahl"

1999 Begins work on "Vanitas" cycle
2000 Provides three sculptures for Palace Bensberg First presentation of the "Vesper" cycle in the exhibition Lost Paradise Lost
2005 Completes first of twelve cathedral windows for "Machabäerchor" at St. Andreas Cathedral, Cologne
